2.Chamula and Zinacantán Guided Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.4 · 203 reviews · 5 hours · from $32

Travel from San Cristóbal with an English or Spanish-speaking guide to San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán. Expect a striking church visit, Tzotzil weaving, handmade tortillas, coffee, and regional pox tasting, with time to browse local textiles.

“Miguel spoke great English, he explained everything, which meant we understood everything we saw. I was expecting that the weaving shop in Zinacantán would be very touristy but it’s not. The women working there are genuinely happy. Chamula church was as different as a church can be. I liked the smell of pine leaves, the candles and seeing the genuine rituals taking place. All that, and more, was explained by Miguel. Good trip. Better to go with a guide and Miguel was excellent.”

“This activity was amazing. We choose it as practical way to continue our trip from Palenque. Consider to wake up early and the time spent on the bus. Although it's a great chance to see a lot of small rural villages along the way. We had enough time to visit the places, only Palenque was a bit tight but doable. Our drive really made this activity exceptional. He was very kind, flexible, and really cared about the passengers, telling stories about Chiapas (in Spanish). I'd recommend it.”

“We made this tour as 4 people with Gonzalo on March 24, 2025. I travel a lot and this tour was the worst experience I ever had. The tour supposed to start at 9 am, but nobody showed up. After trying to contact them and GYG for 45 minutes, tour provider and GYG solved the issue and agreed to take us at 10 am, 1 hour later than usual. Our “tour guide” was not an actual guide but a person who knew the area. He didn’t speak English, although we HAVE paid for an English tour. We arrived to the port for the boats for Sumidero Canyon. A group left…”

★★★★★★★★★★4.4 · 65 reviews · 12.5 hours · from $105

Leave Palenque around 6:00 AM for Yaxchilán and Bonampak with Jaguar Negro. Ride a lancha on the Usumacinta River, explore remote Maya ruins, see Bonampak’s painted rooms, and meet Lacandone people. Breakfast and site entries are included, while local guides and lunch cost extra.

“This is much too long for a day trip. The driver drove dangerously fast in the morning because he wanted to get us back in time. Van ride was very uncomfortable because there were too many people in the van, as 2 people were added. Please consider splitting this into two separate trips. It took 14 hours, not the 12.5 advertised. The guide the driver recommended cost 2,000 pesos, not the 200 advertised.”

12.Yaxchilan & Bonampak Ruins and Lacandon Jungle from Palenque

★★★★★★★★★★4.2 · 44 reviews · 13 hours · from $210

Puntualidad aceptable y buena limpieza.”

“Trip included the promised sights, Palenque ruins and Roberto Barrios waterfalls. Both are well worth your time and money. The transport was confusing as we kept jumping from one van to another. There was no tour guide, but we paid the lady who rode the van with us 400 pesos each for a guided tour and she was pretty well informed. Overall we would do it again. Nola Lara”
